Geotextile Pore Structure Characterization Using Image Analysis

چکیده

Filtration performance of geotextiles strongly depends on their pore structure parameters, i.e. percent open area (POA), pore opening size distribution (PSD) and constriction size distribution (CSD). Current methods of determination of pore structure parameters contain inherent disadvantages whereas image analysis can be used effectively for this purpose. Two new image-based PSD and CSD determination methods and a new imagebased POA determination method were developed specifically for woven and nonwoven geotextiles. The POAs, and a characteristic pore opening or constriction size, O95 or C95, of various geotextiles were determined using the information provided by the image analysis methods. The image-based POAs and the pore opening size of woven geotextiles were comparable to those obtained from the physical measurements and the values reported by the manufacturers. The constriction sizes of nonwoven geotextiles were comparable to the ones using the bubble point test and the values suggested by a theoretical equation. However, the image-based constriction sizes were consistently lower than the manufacturer’s reported apparent opening size, which is typically determined on the basis of the dry sieving test.

Digital Image Analysis to Determine Pore Opening Size Distribution of Nonwoven Geotextiles

The filtration performance of a geotextile is controlled by its pore opening size distribution ~PSD!. Current methods for determining PSD are mostly indirect and contain inherent disadvantages. Recent technological advancements in image analysis offer great potential for a more accurate and direct way of determining the PSD of nonwoven geotextiles. A new and accurate method of image analysis fo...

Constriction Size of Geotextile Filters

Filtration performance of nonwoven geotextiles strongly depends on pore opening constriction size, i.e., the minimum opening size of flow channels across the geotextile. Currently available methods of pore opening characterizations do not provide accurate information about the constriction size. This paper presents the constriction size distributions of eleven nonwoven geotextiles commonly used...

Evaluation of Woven Geotextile Pore Structure Parameters Using Image Analysis

Filtration performance of woven geotextiles is strongly related to their pore structure parameters, i.e., percent open area (POA) and pore-opening size distribution (PSD). Current methods of determination of pore structure parameters contain inherent disadvantages, whereas image analysis, taking advantage of the two-dimensional structure of woven geotextiles, can be used effectively for this pu...

A semi-analytical methodology for development of woven geotextile filter selection criteria

Geotextiles have been commonly used in geotechnical and environmental engineering projects to prevent erosion of soils in contact with the filter without impeding the flow of seeping water through the soil. Several empirical criteria incorporating varying factors of safety have been proposed for selection of geotextile filters. A probabilistic numerical filter model, named RETAIN, using image-b...

Filtration Performance of Woven Geotextiles with Wastewater Treatment Sludge

Capping of contaminated soft sediments and sludges for in situ containment provides an efficient remediation alternative. Capping design typically involves the use of geosynthetics for multiple functions, e.g., reinforcement, separation, and filtration. Filtration performance becomes a decisive factor for proper long-term performance of a cap. Because of multiple functions required, woven geote...
